John Rose born in Covington, VA in 1963. He graduated from James Madison University in 1986, with a BFA in Art and joined Byrd Newspapers of Virginia as an editorial cartoonist in 1988. He started at The Warren Sentinel and moved to the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record in 1993. In 1998, Rose was hired was hired as Fred Lasswell’s Inking Assistant on the popular, long-running BARNEY GOOGLE AND SNUFFY SMITH comic strip. After Lasswell’s death in 2001, King Features asked Rose to be the cartoonist for the strip. Rose considers being the cartoonist for King Features’ BARNEY GOOGLE AND SNUFFY SMITH comic strip as the greatest joy of his professional career. In 2013, King Features published his first Snuffy Smith comic strip book collection, The Bodacious Best of Snuffy Smith. In 2016, they published his second, Balls of Fire! More Snuffy Smith Comics. He is currently working on his third collection. Rose has won awards from the Virginia Press Association, the National Newspaper Association and, in 2015, he was presented the Lum and Abner Memorial Award by the National Lum and Abner Society for his contribution to rural humor. He lives in Virginia with his wife, Karen.
