John Rose

John Rose born in Covington, VA with a drawing pencil in my hand. Graduated from James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA) in 1986, with a BFA in Art. Worked with some smaller Virginia papers until 1993 when I moved back to my ol’ college town and was hired by the Daily News-Record as their Cartoonist. My editorial cartoons run in the News-Record and the 7 other papers in the Byrd Newspaper chain which spans Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Won some awards from the Virginia Press Association, the National Newspaper Association and had on editorial cartoon collection published.

I created Kids’ Home Newspaper in 1988. It’s been syndicated with Copley News Service since 1991 to 200 papers. It’s a cartoon/activity page for young readers starring a sill dog named Pup.

In 1998, I started working for “Uncle” Fred Lasswell (the greatest cartoonist I’ve ever known!) as his inking assistant on BARNEY GOOGLE AND SNUFFY SMITH. After his death in March 2001. King Features asked me to draw the strip. I’m havin’ a hoot an’ a holler drawin’ these characters each an’ ev’ry day! I feel very fortunate.

When I’m not drawing, my terrific wife and I spend most of our free time in search of the perfect pizza with our two daughters.
